Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University (NMMU) has opened 2023 intake applications. The university offers studies in seven faculties of Business & Economic Sciences, Education, Engineering, The Built Environment & Technology, Health Sciences, Humanities, Law and Science. The university is inviting qualified South African and international applicants to apply for their undergraduate and postgraduate studies.

South African Applicants

4 August 2022 – Early closing date; however, late application will be considered based on academic merit until September

International Students

30 September – Undergraduate / Honours / Coursework Masters / MBA

No closing date – Research Masters / PhD

The online application process for Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University

  1. Visit and discover what programmes are available and their requirements and see if they are not yet full. Having all the information, you can now decide what programmes you wish to study
  2. Complete the online application form indicating if you require funding and  residence application if you want to stay on campus.
  3. You can upload your supporting documents.
  4. Submit your applications. The university will not process incomplete application forms.
  5. Pay a nonrefundable application fee of R500 if you are an international applicant.
  6. After submitting your applications, you can start to check their statuses online and change your programme choices and contact details if you want. The university will also send you a notification via SMS if you are South African or email if you are an international applicant, so make sure you provide valid contact details.
  7. The university will send you an offer later if your application is successful, and you must accept that offer so that the university will reserve a place for you.
  8. You can now pay your fees, attend orientation, and learn about the registration dates and when lectures will start.

Required documents when applying to Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University

You must submit certified copies of the following documents:

Undergraduate Studies

  • ID or passport if you are an international applicant. You can provide your ID number on your birth certificate if you are a minor.
  • Grade 11 final or grade 12 June or September results or your latest results if you are an international applicant. Grade 12 March results do not apply.
  • Parents or guardians declaration form and their certified copies of IDs if you depend on them.
  • Marriage certificate, if applicable
  • Your completed disability form, if applicable
  • Proof of address if you apply for residence
  • Transcript or certificate if you have studied at other higher learning institutions

Postgraduate Studies

  • Certified copy of your ID or passport if you are an international applicant
  • One written page of the research topic you intend to do
  • A study proposal outlining your field of study and topic
  • Curriculum Vitae
  • Complete the postgraduate form if you are applying for postgraduate programmes
  • Degree certificate
  • Academic transcripts showing courses completed

Selection Test

The university requires South African and international applicants for other undergraduate programmes to do selection tests. Please submit your test results as early as possible since it is also part of the selection process. Visit to book the test.

Does the Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University offer bursaries?

The university awards the Nelson Mandela University Scholar and merit bursaries; these are awarded to academically students. It also provides NSAFS loans.
